It seems that all of the good stuff goes down at a Winn-Dixie – meaning most of the nation outside of Florida misses out, at least in person. Palm Beach security guards got to experience the scene live, led on an "intense" chase – of a slow-speed, motorized shopping cart topping out at 3 mph.
It all starts inside of the Winn-Dixie store: security says the guy stole some meat, and that he ran over a kid’s foot during his escape.
It all ends in the grocery store’s parking lot: the guy says he’s not going down without a fight, using a 3-mph motorized cart as his ‘getaway’ vehicle.
Lorenson’s getaway vehicle didn’t quite match his bravado -- the Winn-Dixie accuses Lorenson of loading up 11 packages of meat from the butcher's area, before cruising out of the store at three miles per hour or less.
The driver did take out one ‘victim’ in his path. While exiting the grocery store, a woman and her 4-year-old son had just been arriving. While driving his meat-stacked cart, Lorensen instructed customers to move out of the way -- but the mesmerized boy apparently couldn’t stop looking at the oncoming, slower-than-molasses grocery cart that was bearing down on him.
Louis Lorensen, age 58, was finally cornered by security guards and employees of the Palm Beach Winn-Dixie, who waited for police to show – in the meantime, Lorenson valiantly issued his proclamation: "I ain't no punk, and I ain't going down without a fight.”
In the end, just one physical injury: the boy got a foot run over, by the slow-moving motorized grocery cart, in the melee.
Apparently Lorenson was determined not to go ‘in’ without a fight either, the 58-year-old telling cops at the station: "When you take these cuffs off, I'm going to punch you in the face.” Fortunately, for him, Lorenson must’ve thought better of that idea. He avoided charges of assault on a police officer, but cops in Florida seem to take things seriously: in their efforts to “take a bite out of crime,” Lorenson ended up with five charges including two counts of larceny, aggravated battery on a child, possession of stolen property and resisting arrest.
