It's one of the most expensive divorces in nationwide history. Frank and Jamie McCourt may wind up paying more in legal fees over that nasty split than the Los Angeles Dodgers' highest paid baseball player who reaps $33 million per year. The McCourts may have one guarantee in the expensive split: The highest cost, ever, for a divorce in the 'Golden State'.
Already the McCourts have kicked in more than $20 million to attorneys for divorce proceedings for bills that continue to rack up: as of July 15, 2011, Jamie McCourt has spent about $11.2 million dollars while husband Frank has spent about $9.4 million on lawyers thus far.
No word on why Frank seems to have ended up with a cheaper attorney. But, unfortunately for Frank McCourt, that fact -- an extra two million he's saved -- probably won't help him in the long run: While the male McCourt may have found a better 'deal' for legal representation, both parts of the union are sharing that divorce bill, still legally married and responsible for a joined debt.
When things are said and done, it's estimated the high-profile couple will be throwing at least another $15 million into the pot, to finish up all the legal stuff related to the split. That will bring the tally up to about $35 million -- meaning the McCourt divorce could easily see more money spent on lawyers than what the highest-paid Dodgers player -- contract Dodgers pitcher Ted Lilly -- earns per year. Ted Lilly makes $33 million per year. Or that's the way it's supposed to work anyway.
With the bankruptcy and all, the Dodgers pitcher better hope it's not one of the McCourt attorneys who sees his salary instead.
