Some NBA Celtics fans didn't get the game they were looking for-purchasing fake tickets for the NBA Finals. It would have been an amazing birthday gift to attend Game 5 for one local’s boyfriend.

Stephanie Cavanaugh,a Celtics fan, thought tickets would be amazing birthday gift to attend Game 5 for one her boyfriend. She purchased a pair of Celtics Finals tickets on Craigslist Friday. “His birthday is in a couple weeks so I thought what a great gift that would be, what a chance of a lifetime,” said Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh was told that the tickets would cost her $225 a piece, which seemed too good to be true, when similar Finals seats were being sold for $2,000 on StubHub.

When things seem to be too true, they usually A-R-E

“I thought it [the Boston Celtics ticket price] was low, but I thought I was lucky. I said no way, and then I was thinking, well they’re over there, they have to get rid of the [game] tickets, they can’t go to the game,” said Cavanaugh. A word to the wise: NO ONE needs to 'get rid of' NBA Finals game tickets--it just doesn't work out that way.

Cavanaugh researched the seller from England, who said her company had tickets that they couldn’t use. According to Cavanaugh, the company seemed legitimate, the seller appeared to be an employee and the mailing company checked out.

Cavanaugh wired the money and that was the last she heard from them.

Hello, people-there's a reason you don't wire money; why do you think ebay stopped wire services, and they even have other checks and balances in place. “The first thing I read was Birmingham, United Kingdom, but then the more I read I thought okay, it sounds okay, and then when I researched it further I thought it was a legitimate website,” said Cavanaugh.

Cavanaugh’s boyfriend, Adam, is less disappointed that they are out $500, and more upset he cannot attend Sunday night’s game. “It’s a once in a lifetime chance versus the Lakers,” said Adam.

Well, that's actually not quite true--the two teams have played one another in the NBA Finals, more than any other two NBA basketball teams. So keep chipper, Adam--or at least be more disappointed by the 500 hundred bucks.

Boston Police arrested a 42-year-old California man, who additionally used the Craigslist online site to sell fake NBA Finals tickets for $1400 a piece.
