In a move to battle teen pregnancy rates, a new condom size is being manufactured--Extra-small condoms for young boys—ages 12 and up—are now available in Switzerland.
The new, smaller sized condoms are called the “Hotshot”—manufactured after the Swiss government learned from research that 12 to 14-year-olds did not use sufficient protection when having sex. The study, conducted on behalf of the Federal Commission for Children and Youth, interviewed 1,480 young people between the ages of 10 to 20. The study showed that more 12 to 14-year-olds were having sex compared to the 1990s.
The new Hotshot condoms, which run about the same price as those in the United States, have been created by Lamprecht AG--a leading condom manufacturer in Switzerland. The Hotshot manufacturing company has said that the UK would be “top priority” if it does expand distribution of the condoms to countries abroad—based on the fact that the UK has the highest teen pregnancy rate in Europe.
