Police claim that a New Jersey man—first charged with shoplifting in early July—proceeded to bail out of jail using fake money, then returned to the police station in order to demand a refund bail amount.
The 25-year-old was first arrested for allegations of shoplifting at a combination clothing store and supermarket. When police discovered that he had two outstanding warrants, he had to pay $400 in order to bail out—choosing to pay in cash.
Police later realized the money counterfeit—having accepted fake bills as a “get out of jail free”card.
Before police could locate the man, he kindly showed up—to argue that he’d supposedly been mischarged for bail. The man claimed he should have been charged only $200 in bail, and wanted $200 back. Apparently he was right about being mischarged—police then charged him with counterfeiting and booked into Burlington County Jail with a related $5,000 bail.
Hard to say who’s stupider—apparently the police station isn’t even smart enough to keep a counterfeit pen on hand, in order to check bills from who they already believe to be criminals.
