Police say Jackass star Ryan Dunn hit speeds of 130-140 mph in a 55 mph zone, when his Porsche 911 flew off the road and into feet of trees, killing Dunn and Zachary Hartwell instantly on June 20. In the hours following Rogert Ebert opened his mouth, tweeting: 'Friends don't let jackasses drink and drive.' The Ebert statement received an outraged "f*** you!" from Dunn's best friend, fellow Jackass star Bam Margera.
West Goshen Police Chief Michael Carroll has called the accident the worst crash he's ever seen. Tox results that were originally expected to take up to six weeks are now back within just days -- reflecting that Ryan Dunn is suspected to have been drunk during the accident, with a blood alcohol of more than double the legal limit and estimated at .196 percent. The legal blood alcohol limit in the state of Pennsylvania is .08. There were no other substances, in Dunn's system, reflected in the toxicology results.
West Goshen Police believe the Porsche Dunn was driving had hit extremely high rates of speed before colliding with a guardrail. The car eventually landed in the Pennsylvania woods, thought to be traveling at 132 mph -- after leaving a 100-yard-skidmark before leaving the ground, to fly through feet of trees. The vehicle exploded into flames in the woods where the passenger is thought to have been killed in a fireball.
West Goshen's Michael Carroll said 'I've never seen a car destroyed in an automobile accident the way this car was even before it caught on fire." Next to nothing remains of the Porsche's charred frame in an accident so violent that even the coroner says it will be unable to determine whether the accident impact or flames were the cause of death.
The West Goshen cop added: 'The [Porsche] automobile actually came apart. It was unbelievable and I've been on a lot of fatal accident scenes. This is by far the worse I've ever seen.' Only pieces of what was once a car remain: charred and unidentifiable pieces of the vehicle that was towed from the accident scene.
Before the accident, Ryan Dunn himself had sent a photo taken at Barnaby's of America bar -- where he was shown partying with friends, in a time span of about three hours where Dunn is said to have consumed three light beers and three shots between 10.30pm and 2.10am. Less than 20 minutes later, on his way back to home in West Gonesh, Ryan Dunn died in the fatal crash that took him over the Pennsylvania guardrail.
Ryan Dunn had recently starred in the yet-to-be-released film "Living Will". Ironically, the film's website describes Dunn's character as a "party bum slacker (who) returns from the dead as a mischievous and perverted ghost."
Few deaths in life can be quite so shocking or violent. But the violent and tragic loss in the fatal crash didn't stop film critic Roger Ebert from opening his mouth via Twitter. In a terrible lack of empathy for grieving family, friends and fans, only hours after Dunn's car accident Ebert tweeted: 'Friends don't let jackasses drink and drive.'
Considering Dunn's weight and size, police hadn't been sure the Jackass star was over the legal limit for alcohol intake--or that drinking and driving was a possible or responsible factor in the crash that took Dunn's life.
Bam's mother, April Margera, had originally said she didn't believe Dunn was driving drunk at the time of his death -- stating Dunn wasn't the type of person to get behind the wheel while drunk:"I have yelled at him for lots of things but he was not a big drinker and he was always responsible as far as I know, so I cannot believe he would do that."
Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn's friend, immediately responded with understandable outrage over Roger Ebert's tacky tweet. Regardless of circumstances behind the death of Dunn, Roger Ebert made a horrible error in judgment with his statement via the social networking site. The two friends, Bam Margera and Ryan Dunn met in high school. Born in Ohio, Ryan Dunn had moved to Pennsylvania at age 15, where he met Bam Margera on his first day of high school. Bam Margera considers the Jackass co-star his best friend and tweeted a response to Ebert's statement:
Late Monday night Margera told the Twitter world: "I just lost my best friend, I have been crying hysterical for a full day and piece of s**t roger ebert has the gall to put in his 2 cents about a jackass drunk driving and [he is] one, f*** you!"
Bam Margera says the notification of Dunn's death is the worst phone call he's ever received in life. He further responded to the Ebert criticism by saying: 'Millions of people are crying right now, shut your fat f*****g mouth!'
Margera had immediately taken a flight from Arizona to Pennsylvania following the car accident, to visit the scene -- where he was said to be rocking back and forth in agony at the guardrail where Dunn's Porsche exited into the woods and slammed through 40 feet of trees before exploding. A weeping and visibly shaken Margera told reporters: 'I've never lost anybody that I cared about. It's my best friend."
Lower than even Roger Ebert's remarks: Someone is looting the car parts, or what remains of them, from the Ryan Dunn crash -- to sell them on online auction site ebay.
