A 27-year-old man is slated to spend 90 days in jail—and four years in prison--after stealing a spider from a Maryland public library.
Westminster library staff called police May 19 after discovering that mascot “Chili Rose”--a Chilean Rose species of tarantula who resided at the library’s information desk--was gone. Witnesses told police they’d seen Randy Humple with the spider, that he bragged about stealing the library’s tarantula.
Not terribly surprising, Humple was apparently also violating probation related to a 2007 assault case. Between the probation violation and spider swiping, Hughes has been sentenced to 4 years in prison.
Humple told the judge he knows he's done some stupid things and he wants to serve his sentence—apparently using spider swiping as one of the stupidest ways to violate probation and land back in prison.
