Whomever is torturing seagulls in the Bay Area deserves a beer can around their own neck: a wildlife group is offering a $2,000 bounty after two birds have been found tortured by cut beer cans placed over their heads and necks, in the San Francisco Bay Area.
At least two birds with the beer can “collars” have been spotted in the Northern California California locations of Half Moon Bay, Fisherman's Wharf and Alcatraz Island, says “Wild Rescue” of Monterey, the group appealing to the public for help in finding the seagulls’ torturer.
"Instead of attempting to capture the birds [seagulls], which can make them [the wildlife] more wary [of humans] and harder to catch, sightings [of birds with beer can collars] should be reported immediately to the dedicated paging service at 831-429-2323," says “Wild Rescue”.
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has been notified of the seagull torture sightings and wildlife animal abuse: "This [abuse] is a federal crime punishable by severe fines, imprisonment, or both," says “Wild Rescue” spokesperson Rebecca Dmytryk, whom also serves as contact person for the Southern California “EarthWays Foundation” in Malibu.
A $2,000 reward is being offered by “Wild Rescue” as incentive for capture of the person found to be torturing the seagulls bearing cut beer cans as “collars”.
"I feel pretty confident that if word gets around [about the seagulls tortured with cut beer cans], we’ll be able to find the birds and help them," Dmytryk says. "I’m also hopeful that we’ll track down the perpetrator, maybe even through fingerprints. But, just that people are watching, and there’s a bounty, maybe that’s enough to get them to stop torturing animals."
Screw the $2000—the seagull torturer needs a beer can “collar” of his own.
